at Josenji Temple featuring the Amida Triad.
On September 30, 2024, a recording was made at the Amida Hall of Josenji Temple, the final resting place and a spiritually significant site connected to the late Kyōchiku Tani.Founded during the Kamakura period, this temple is the oldest wooden structure in Kumamoto Prefecture, and the Amida Triad enshrined within is designated as a National Cultural Property. As if guided by the spirit of Kyōchiku himself, this fateful recording was realized with the support of local custodians and the board of education.
Just before dawn—when silence begins to give way to the flow of daily life—the meditative sound of the flute, resonating with history and time, was captured just as it was, along with the natural sounds of the surrounding environment.
The meditative breath of Kyotaku performer Kokō Shiratsuchi, the natural reverberation of the Kyotaku echoing through an 800-year-old structure, the voices of insects and birds, the subtle presence of animals, the Amida Triad that has long been an object of devotion, and the spirit of the komusō monk Kyōchiku Tani—all of these dwell within this recording.
This work is a document of time and space, captured in a single take without any processing or editing.
